After 14 years working in the high pressure world of computers, Rita Henry decided to leave the stress behind and open Inner Prosperity, which focuses on helping people find peace in their own lives.
"Being in the computer industry, it just taught me so much. It was hot — sink or swim — and I loved being able to support people," said Henry, who founded Inner Prosperity in 1998. "I loved the people, but computers, they just don't do it for me."
Inner Prosperity, 2708 Grand Ave., provides a range of services, including personal coaching, healing work, classes, Reiki sessions, meditation, massage and CranioSacral therapy, a hands-on healing method of unblocking energy from the top of the head down the spine.
Henry, 43, operates the business along with her husband, Michael, who handles the behind-the-scenes work such as accounting and the company's Web site.
Rita Henry, the company president, works with her clients on body energy, personal coaching, spiritual response therapy and Reiki, a Japanese technique where a practitioner places their hands on the client's body to channel energy into the body.
"Inner Prosperity is about supporting people in discovering who they are," said Henry. "That's how I say what I do. I work to strengthen people mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually."
With Deb Engle, Henry is also leading a class on the book "A Course in Miracles." The two are using the book as a springboard to discuss relationships, money and health issues in participants' lives.
There are sessions Wednesday and Nov. 14 at the Raccoon River Park Nature Lodge on Grand Avenue in West Des Moines. Call 313-1156 for more information.
Henry recently talked about the business.
Q. How do you help people?
A. I read energy. It's about knowing what is going on, helping people reach the highest enlightened awareness of their soul. I support them in removing the blocks, and living a life of freedom. I work to empower other people to connect with the truth of who they are.
Q. What kind of issues do people come to you to address?
A. I work with people on their relationships, and their physical, mental and emotional health. We've been taught to look without instead of looking within. But finally, when the pain is greater than the fear, we're open to trying something new. And that's the journey inside. It's an exciting and courageous journey because it's about seeing the truth.
Q. Who are your clients, and how often do you meet with people?
A. I've worked with newborns, all the way up to people in their 70s and 80s. But I'd say that the bulk of my clients are between 30 and 60. Some clients come on a regular basis or once a month, and some connect with me only when they're in incredible pain. I also travel several times a year to meet with my clients on the East Coast.
Q. Give me an example of your work.
A. I worked with a woman whose niece wouldn't invite her step-dad to her wedding. The aunt asked me to do a clearing and raise the level of consciousness. When I was done, the niece called her step-dad 45 minutes later and invited him to her wedding.
Q. You said one event in particular helped you come to the realization that you wanted to leave the computer industry. Tell me about that.
A. I had my youngest daughter, Julia, and her identical twin sister, Amy, 13 years ago. They were born very prematurely and Amy only lived for nine days. Julia was in the hospital for four months, and came home on Thanksgiving day in 1994. That experience was very impactful for me, and shifted my life. It guided me into part of where I am today.
Q. What's a session like?
A. You never know how a session is going to go. I listen to what it is that they want, and read what's going on energetically. It's about supporting the person in connecting with the truth of who they are so they can open up and have new experiences with people on the outside.
Q. Tell me about the physical space where you meet with people?
A. Two walls here are actually underground, and so it's like we're going into the womb of mother earth. It's so grounded and safe, and I've tried to create a safe environment for people to heal.
Q. How do you relax?
A. I meditate, and I receive sessions from (Quantum Quests International founder and self-development author) Jonathan Parker and (craniosacral and massage therapist) Kevin (Thoren). I've really had to grow and stretch to release a lot of my stories and blocks. I make connections with nature, and exercise on a regular basis. And I take baths!
